Questa mattina, alla presenza del precedente direttore del Centro, padre Lerma, si è celebrata la solenne eucaristia per ricordare i martiri di Guiua.
Chi sono questi laici che con la loro vita hanno testimoniato, in un momento difficile per il paese, la loro fede cristiana.

Facciamo un passo indietro e iniziamo dal contesto.

Dal 1976 al 1992 il Mozambico passò attraverso uno dei più tragici periodi della sua storia. Era il tempo della guerra civile, piena di atrocità e terrore, fra il governo della Frelimo e il movimento Renamo.

Era un periodo in cui i nemici venivano uccisi senza pietà..un periodo di lotta fra ideologie..
Gli effetti furono catastrofici.. più di 1 milione di morti, 1 milione e mezzo di rifugiati e 9 millioni di Internal Displaced People. e la quasi completa delle infrastrutture del paese.
In questo contesto difficile tuttavia Guiua continuò a funzionare e a dare il suo contributo di formazione e a essere centro di pace fra le atrocità.

Il primo attacco ebbe luogo nel 1987, in cui perse la vita un catechista. In seguito al crescere delle violenze, il centro rimase chiuso dal 1988 al 1991. Con il 1992, pur nel pericolo, si ricominciò a fare formazione con 15 famiglie provenienti da tutta la regione,

Tutto ebbe inizio sabato 21 marzo 1992. Alle ore 15 si udirono i primi spari..ma questo non mise in guardia..era infatti comune udire il crepitare delle armi da fuoco..

La sera, dopo mezzanotte, i missionari della Consolata Andrea Brevi e John Njoroge e le suore sentirono delle voci provenire dalle case dei catechisti.

Il centro fu circondato da uomini armati, alcuni anche di 10-15 anni..ma già uomini per le esperienze vissute..

Iniziarono a irrompere nelle casette, le stesse dove anche chi scrive sta dormendo..non più che semplici bandas con il tetto di lamiera..

Nella notte, iniziarono a sfondare i vetri e le porte, a saccheggiare e a concentrare uomini, donne e bambini..i primi che tentarono una resistenza furono freddati.

Il gruppo si divise poi in 3 gruppi, uno si diresse verso la casa delle suore..lasciando dietro di loro un’altra giovane vittima, da poco madre..

Qui iniziarono ad attaccare la casa, ma miracolosamente la porta resse all’attacco..nel frattempo l’esercito regolare sparò 2 colpi di mortaio..e il secondo gruppo di guerriglieri si diresse ad affrontare i regolari.

Al loro rientro i 3 gruppi si diressero nel cortile della scuola primaria e iniziarono ad interrogare e torturare i prigionieri..prima le donne poi gli uomini..

Riportiamo ora la trascrizione tradotta di un interrogatorio di un superstite, Paulo Saieta Kuniane, marito di Veronica Sambila Banze, uccisa dai guerriglieri.

-da dove venite?
Non siamo di qui. Veniamo da missioni in altri distretti della regione..da vilankulos, massinga
-Che cosa stare facendo qui?
Siamo catechisti. Siamo qui per studiare la Bibbia e il lavoro nelle comunità cristiane.
-dove è il vostro cibo
Siamo poveri come tutti gli altri. Non abbiamo depositi e viviamo alla giornata come gli altri
-dove è il comando della Frelimo? Dove sono le mine?
Non sappiamo niente di queste cose. Siamo qui da pochi giorni e non sappiamo molto di qui. Solo che è una missione cattolica, un centro per formare catechisti.
-siete padri missionari?
No siamo catechisti
-quanti anni vi fermerete qui?
Per un anno intero
-Dove sono i padri?
Nella loro casa
E poi con freddezza…
-non importa se abbia detto la verità o no..morirete tutti comunque..

E l’uomo fu buttato a terra e colpito alla testa con un calcio..

Vedendo che ormai l’alba era vicina i guerriglieri decisero di ritirarsi nel bush e due catechisti riuscirono così a fuggire. A questo punto freddarono una ragazza per intimidire e scoraggiare ogni altra velleità di fuga.

Una volta nella boscaglia scelsero 10 uomini da portare con loro. Poi scelsero un bambino e lo mandarono indietro alla missione a dire che avrebbero ucciso tutti..e di venire pure a fermarli con i soldati..

E poi, all’arma bianca iniziarono la mattanza..

20 persone furono uccise all’arma bianca..all’arrivo dei padri quello che trovarono furono una ragazza quindicenne ferita gravemente allo stomaco e due neonati che piangevano disperatamente.

In totale 23 persone persero la vita nell’attacco, tra cui il più piccolo di neanche un anno di vita.

Oggi i catechisti sono considerati martiri dalla chiesa locale e sono sepolti nel centro di Guiua.


This morning Father Francisco Lerma Martinez, the former director of the Guiua Centre for Human Welfare, celebrated a service to honor the so called Martyrs of Guiua.

Who are those people who lost their lives to testify their faith?

From 1976 to 1992 Mozambique passed through one of the most tragic periods of its history.

The country was laid waste by one of the most devastating wars ever fought in modern Africa. It was a civil war between Frelimo government and the Renamo movement.
It was a war in which people looked upon, hated and killed their neighbors without pity.
It was a time of confrontation between ideologies which left the country with more than 1 million dead, 1.5 million refugees and 9 million people IDPs.

Despite the ongoing violence, the Guiua Centre for Human Welfare continued its role. In 1987 a catechist was shot to death during an attach. The centre then was shut down, but, in 1992 it opened again.

At 3:00 PM on Saturday, March 21, 1992, the first gunshots were heard but life went on normally, without interruption at the centre.
Shortly after midnight Father Andrea Brevi e Father John Njoronge, heard voices coming from the Catechists’ residences.

The same ones where I am staying now..

The Centre was surrounded by armed men who were getting ready to sack, kidnap and massacre. There were also ten and fifteen year old boys carrying arms among the aggressors.
They started beating on the doors and breaking in the house..two catechists were shot dead..
Then the guerrilla men divided in three groups..one headed towards the Sisters’ residence. They killed a young lady..
Luckly they didn’t manage to force the door and left the Sisters’ residence.
Another group went searching for the Army soldiers who fired two mortar shot..and on the way back kidnapped another lady who was hiding at the clinic.
The third group stayed with the hostages.
Then after regrouping they gathered everyone in the primary school courtyard..and started questioning the women and then the men.

The following is the testimony of a survivor, Paulo Saieta Kuniane, husband of one of the dead, Veronica Sambula Banze.
-Where do you come from?
We’re not from here..we come from missions in other districts of the province, Vilankulo, Massinga
-What are you doing here?
We are catechists. We have come here to learn about the Bible and Christian community work
-Where is your food?
We are poor like everyone else. We have no store-houses. We live from hand to mouth as best we can.
-Where is the Frelimo Command?Where are the mines?
We know nothing about those things., We are not from here. We have only been here a few days and don’t know much about this place. It is a Catholic mission, a centre for training catechists.
-Are you missionary fathers?
No, we are catechists
-How many years will you remain here?
For one whole year
-Where are the fathers?
In their own house.
Then the guerrilla men said
It doesn’t really matter whether you are telling the truth or lying..you’re going to die anyway..

Then the man kicked the catechist in the head.

Seeing that dawn was approaching the men decided to get back to the bush.
Two catechists managed to escape and so the guerrilla men in order to intimidate the other prisoners killed a young girl.

After a march into the bush they divided the captives and picked out ten people to follow the invaders back to their base.

They sent back a six-years old boy to tell the fathers that they were killing everyone..
And then the slaughter started..with bayonets..

When the fathers reached the place they found a young girl with a deep wound in her stomach and two newborn babies crying desperately among the dead bodies.

In all twenty-three people died..and the youngest was 1 year old

Those people are now buried in Guiua and there venerated as martyrs.
