Avviso Sicurezza Nazioni Unite per lo Staff

Dear All,

In the view of the events that took place in Maputo during this week and in order to mitigate the risk of becoming a victim of any unforeseen situation, some security measures are strongly recommended. Besides the security recommendations already given in the security briefings, travel advisory and other security related documents, the Security Unit – Mozambique kindly requests all UN staff members and their dependants to strictly implement the following safety/security advices for the coming weekend:

- Despite the situation throughout the country being calm and quiet, with no reports of incidents of any sort in the provinces, avoid traveling to tourist destinations outside Maputo during this weekend;

- If you travel let your Security Focal Point know your time of departure and call him(her) upon arrival at your final destination;

- Before returning to Maputo, call your Security Focal Point and ask about the security situation in Maputo. If the situation deteriorates do not return to Maputo until further instructions and keep in touch with your Security Focal Point;

- Keep the fuel tank full. The lack of petrol and diesel in town is due to:

- The lack of supply in the last 3 days by the gas tanker s which have not circulated due to the danger of explosion during the riots;

- Most of the fuel comes from South Africa and, the southern entrance of the town (highway"Portagem") was one of the most sensitive spots during the disturbances. So the gas tankers did not take the risk of crossing that area;

The Diplomatic Police Commander stated that there is not a lack of stocks thus the situation will be normalized within a couple ofdays;

- Avoid driving in the suburbs of Maputo. The quarters in the Eastern side of the airport, namely the alternative way to the north through the roundabouts is considered to be less safe than the Moçambique Avenue in the Western side;

- Do not travel during dark hours;

- Avoid driving or walking alone, namely in isolated areas;

- Communications are 50% of the security. Be always reachable by phone, keepyour battery charged and make sure that there is cell phone coverage in the area you are going to. Otherwise use a sat phone or a radio;

- Make sure you are always in possession of your documents;

- If involved in an incident/ accident call the Security Unit for assistance;

- Turn back immediately if you see any sign of riot, demonstration or protest;

- Do not panic with SMS messages sent by agitators. They have been sent in the last three days to incite violence and public disorder with no success so far;

- Never resist to an attack;

- Exercise caution. Stay alert and vigilant at all times
