 This is just to give you an update on the social unrest observed this morning in Chokwe –Gaza province. The Administrator of the town gave an interview to TVM (Television of Mozambique) confirming the riots. According with his statements, there was no specific reason for theprotests. The population has gathered in an area of the town and cut the road allegedly because of the recent rise of the prices in general. He also stated that one of the agitators has used a pistol and the police had to shot in order to disperse the mob. As result of that he confirmed that one individual was killed and five wounded were evacuated to the local hospital. 

That situation is now under control of the authorities but the Administrator said that violence can start over at any moment in other areas of the town.

In the meantime, the situation in Maputo city has been normal throughout the day with no incidents reported.

UN staff members are kindly requested to stay alert, be vigilant and report immediately any abnormal situation.
